Yeah,
I went to visit the Jimmy K sail. I didn’t like what I saw. That’s
MY boat. It was just after Christmas a year ago. It bothered me –
the sail of that once great lady torn asunder, sliced through the
middle, the top of the sail here, the fairwater planes there, the
hatch over there, and the rest of the sail over yonder. And faded
gray – I wanted to grab a paint bucket and a working party. And some
welders. And cranes.
The sail of the proud
James K. Polk, Cold Warrior, SSBN, SSN, and Special Operations
veteran has waited at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM for a
half-dozen years. And it’s time, shipmates, for her to tell our
tale. The new National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is a grand
vision, and the Jimmy K will be in great company – a Polaris
missile, a B29 and a B52, and plenty of other reminders of battles
we didn’t have to fight because we held the line.
For a hundred years
young men have gone down to the sea – down in the sea. We are the
blood that has run in our Country’s veins. As strong-willed peaceful
men we stand guard in all the seas of the world. Submariners, as we
love to remind ourselves, are the heart of our Country’s defense.
Submarines and Submariners hunt the
seas
today just as in wars past, silently reminding our foes that the
ocean floor is littered with hulls and bones of those who would do
this nation harm. I’m reminded of a movie where the Warrior roars
“You shall not pass!” That’s us.
Just take a look at the where our boat
is going [click here] –
the showcase of the entire museum! Will she not shine!?!
The museum entrance, with engraved paving stones, and the surfaced
hull with bricks emblazoned with our names for generation after
generation to see. Our names and those of our friends and heroes
surrounding the surviving major piece of our history. And beyond,
the other Super-heroes of the 20th Century – B29, B52 and row after
row of rockets. Did you see the Polaris on the north-west corner?
Got the shivers yet? This is going to
happen, and now! This year – 2008.
I need your help. We have to find a
bit of money, chump change to you tightwad geniuses. Those cranes,
those welders, the equipment to move and site the sail can’t be
bought with a case of beer or a jar of pickled sausage anymore. If
we’d saved our money in Rota, Holy Loch, Norfolk, Groton, Charleston
and the host of other liberty ports we stumbled through, we could do
this on the interest alone. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t
save a penny, thankfully. So now I have to dig a little deeper so
History can tell our story. And I hope you will as well. Get out
your wallet & let's do ourselves and all the shipmates who sail in
the Jimmy K. proud!
